Repeated flat 12V battery
The 12V battery may be old, but repeated discharge can also indicate the converter is not charging or the vehicle is not sleeping correctly.
EVs still need a normal 12V electrical system for computers, lights, locks, screens, pumps and safety relays. Instead of an alternator, the DC-DC converter steps high-voltage battery energy down to keep the 12V battery and low-voltage systems alive.
The high-voltage battery powers the motor, heater, air conditioning compressor and other heavy loads. But most control modules, lights, locks, relays and communication networks still run on 12V.
The DC-DC converter charges and supports the 12V battery when the car is ready, charging, or in certain wake-up states. If it fails, the vehicle can show random warnings, refuse to start, fail to charge or repeatedly flatten the 12V battery.
A weak 12V battery can also make a healthy DC-DC converter look guilty, so both sides need testing.

Low 12V voltage can stop control modules from booting, unlocking, going ready or authorising high-voltage contactors.
ABS, steering, brake, airbag, EV system and communication faults can appear together when the 12V supply is unstable.
The car may need 12V power to lock the cable, wake modules and communicate with the charger before HV charging starts.
Unstable converter output, poor connections or a failing 12V battery can create visible low-voltage symptoms.
Low-voltage supply problems can upset coolant pumps, fans and control modules that support the high-voltage system.
The key question is simple: is the 12V battery bad, is the converter failing to charge it, or is another vehicle system draining it?
Check resting voltage, cranking-style load capability where appropriate, internal resistance, age and whether the battery recovers after charging.
With the vehicle ready or in a charging state, confirm the DC-DC converter raises and regulates the 12V system voltage within the expected range.
Read DC-DC, BMS, gateway, body control, brake, steering and EV control modules. Low 12V voltage can leave clues across the whole network.
Inspect fuses, grounds, harness connections, converter enable signals, HV readiness and communication with the control module.
If the converter works and the battery is healthy, test whether a module is staying awake and draining the 12V battery while parked.
